Class 14: Final Written Test & sign-up for final speaking test

Class 14: Final Written Test & sign-up for final speaking test

Hello everyone,

Today we took the Final written test. Hopefully, you all did very well!

After the break, we spoke about the final speaking test. There are not many questions because the discussions require quite deep thought. Be well prepared and remember to develop the topic and give lots of examples/details to explain your opinion. Also, ask plenty of follow up questions to show you have understood what the other members have said.

I will see you next week for the final class of our semester.

It has been a great semester. I hope the class has been worth it for you, too.

Good luck with all of your final tests!

Class 12: Unit 10; activities and dangers on holiday

Hello everyone,

Today we started by reviewing the prepositions we studied last class. We completed the questions on page 143 activity A (lesson 1). After that, we played a game of hide and seek using the map of Africa. This gave you an opportunity to practice the phrases and prepositions we learned in the last class.

Next, we extended our vocabulary with some nouns, adjectives, and adverb & adjective phrases. We can use these to describe possible dangers when doing various activities on holiday enjoying nature.

We finished with a speaking activity using Jeju Island as our inspiration for a short getaway.

Next class, we will consider the pros and cons of National parks and also what can be done to preserve the beautiful world for future generations. I will also be posting the speaking test guidelines.

Here are the Unit 10 HW assignments:

Class 11: Unit 10; the natural world, prepositions

Class 11: Unit 10; the natural world, prepositions

We began today by looking at a map of Costa Rica and describing the physical features and geographical features of the country. We tried to use prepositions to show location.

Then we learned some phrases from the photo story to talk about visiting attractions when on holiday.

After that, we used our knowledge of South Korea to draw the same geographical features onto a map and recycle the prepositions to make statements explaining where these things are located.

After the break, we looked at the prepositions in / on / to in more detail. I checked the answers to your sentences while you role-played the dialogue on page 113 with the map of Australia and the vocabulary / social-language / grammar from unit 10 so far.

Be careful with your use of 'the'. HERE is a summary sheet to help anyone who is interested.

We finished by thinking about what dangerous animals there are in Australia and South Korea....

Next class, we will talk more about the activities we can do on vacation and what dangers we should be aware of. Then we will use the grammar structure to incorporate that into a free talking activity.

Have a great week(end) everyone!

See you next class~

Class 8 (week 9): Unit 8; inventions

Class 8 (week 9): Unit 8; inventions

Hello everyone,

Today we got back our grades for the midterm. I gave you a score out of 30 points. That is 30% of your total score for the class. I also gave you some feedback about your speaking tests.

After that, we started unit 8. We talked about the difference between inventions and discoveries and then talked about some standout examples of each and how they have changed the world and society in which we live. This You Tube link to a documentary is an interesting watch. An interesting article on the BBC website related to antibiotics shows that we have to reconsider our use of them.

We also learned some phrases to describe products that take advantage of new technology / offer high quality / use new ideas or concepts.

There is a presentation contest being run by the university with some big prizes. If you are interested, you can read the information in this LINKIf anyone wants to enter, I will be available to support you through the process.

See you all next class~

Class 3: Unit 7; holiday customs

Class 3: Unit 7; holiday customs

In class today we talked about different holidays and tried to categorize them (historical/seasonal/religious/annual/commercial).

We talked about how we celebrate Korean Thanksgiving (추석) and whose family is the most traditional. We considered the question of whether it is important to keep traditions alive and why...

We looked at the photo story where two people talk about Chuseok and another similar tradition holiday. We considered the similarities and differences between the way the two holidays are celebrated. We also talked about some of the key phrases from story.

I reminded you that you will need to clarify the meaning of the many Korean words you use when talking about your culture and traditions.

We finished by talking about different ways that holidays are celebrated around the world. We used the conversation model and the phrase 'Thanks, same to you!' which can be used to reciprocate a well-wish.

We looked briefly at the grammar of relative pronouns (who/that) in adjective clauses. We will talk more about them next class.

I will post the unit 7 homework links next Friday~

Class 2: Unit 6; perfect modals and job interviews (unit 6 HW links)

Class 2: Unit 6; perfect modals and job interviews (unit 6 HW links)

Hello everyone,

In class today we began by talking about regrets and then looked at perfect modals.

I should have / shouldn't have DONE something.

Here is a link to a grammar worksheet.

After the break, we looked at qualifications and then prepared to do some mini job interviews.

We all took turns to introduce our groups to the job we would like to get. We talked about what qualifications & skills we need and the duties we would have to perform. Then our group made some notes.

After that, we considered how we would answer the questions (on the handout). Then the plan was to have a mini interview with our group members being a panel of interviewers and us being the applicant. We were going to record our interviews for future reference, but sadly we ran out of time. Keep your handouts, you may want to write some of your own answers on them in case this question is in the midterm.

Next class, we will be moving on to unit 7...

Class 1: Unit 6; future plans

Class 1: Unit 6; future plans

Today was our first class. We made name cards and then got started on the book.

We talked about what field we would like to have a career in. We also talked about what we wanted to be when we were younger. And if it was different why we changed our minds.

We then learned some phrases from the photo story about changing our mind and other idiomatic phrases using 'mind' and 'brain'.

After the break, we talked about reasons for changing our minds and roll played the first dialogue using the social language.

We looked at the grammar of the future in the past.

I was going to be an architect
I wanted to be an architect
I thought I would be an architect

We finished with a review of the vocabulary from pages 62-65 and then did some free talking using the idiomatic phrases. Many of these phrases will be in the exams.
